Prader-Willi syndrome

Ever since my first case of a 2year old child with PWS and severe scoliosis, I have developed an affinity for the treatment of Prader-Willi syndrome. I am proud to be part of the community of specialists providing comprehensive care of these challenging and rewarding patients.  Starting at a very young age, I try the least invasive modalities that will preserve spinal growth and chest development. These include bracing, spinal casting and expandable implants to avoid a spinal fusion during childhood. I am a member of the Clinical and Scientific Advisory Board of IPWSO, the Clinical Advisory Board of PWSA-USA, and have enjoyed giving talks on the orthopaedics of PWS at PWSA-USA, FPWR, PWANY and PWCF meetings over the years.

Patient Testimonials

"Dr VB is one of the best doctors that I have seen. He is kind, caring, always listened to my concerns and made me feel like I was part of the process. I truly believe that without him and his understanding of my other health issues I would have needed spinal surgery. I will be forever grateful for his care."

We have traveled across the country to see Dr. van bosse for over seven years to treat Lillian's scoliosis. When she was five years old, our local Orthopedic Surgeon suggested spinal surgery to fuse her spine because of failed bracing and a progressive curve. Dr Van Bosse found a less invasive way to treat her scoliosis with a brace that not only stopped her curve, but helped correct it while she slept. We'll never forget the relief we felt when we found out she could delay surgery and possibly avoid it completely. Lily is 12 years old and often talks about how Dr. Van Bosse saved her from needing surgery. We continue to treat her with bracing while she grows and are so thankful to have a doctor like Dr. Van Bosse advocating for her!

I first met Dr. VanBosse in 2004 at a presentation for parents with PWS. He was presenting on scoliosis in the PWS population. My son was 2 at the time. Scoliosis was something I dreaded but felt comfort and certainty that if he would ever need surgery, Dr. VanBosse would be the one to do it. No questions asked. He did a talk about scoliosis in PWS and I felt such a kindness in him as a physician unlike any I had ever met. He was personable. He was kind and truly cared about all of the children and families who attended. Sonny would eventually need surgery. This was the most difficult and most dreaded surgery I never wanted him to have. The compassion that he showed me after giving me this news was not that of a doctor. It was as a friend. He explained everything, was patient with me and reassured me that everything was going to be ok. The only comfort I felt was the fact that he was the one that was going to perform this challenging surgery. He was also so understanding and as compassionate with Sonny. So patient, understanding his needs as a child with a disability. The surgery was an enormous success and he corrected his 95 degree curve to about 12. Dedicated and devoted to his patients and any family would be fortunate to have him take part in some of the most challenging orthopedic circumstances a parent may have to face.
